Talking About Trees Film
Suhaib Gasmelbari | France/Sudan/Germany/Chad/Qatar 2019 | Arabic, English, Russian with English subtitles | 1h33m | 15
In this uplifting documentary from Sudan, four charismatic, retired film directors are united by their love for film and passion to restore and reopen their local cinema. Rare footage of older African films intercuts thoughtful, political, and at times nostalgic, discussions between the four protagonists as they reflect on their lives as artists and filmmakers. Talking About Trees delicately weaves together the history of film in Sudan, and of film as a powerful political tool. Director Suhaib Gasmelbari shows the nuances of living a life in resistance to political oppression, in a country where you talk about trees when you cannot talk about politics.
In Edinburgh this will be followed by AiM’s 14th opening in Filmhouse Café Bar, with Sudanese music, wine and African snacks.
