Workshops

As part of a focus on re-evaluating “lost” films from the African continent, we continue to pay attention to children and young people, and their media literacy. Giving young people and their educators an insight into the history of African cinema in a fun and responsible way, has so far lead to wonderfully productive collaborations with education officers in cinemas and school teachers around the UK. Linked to the films in the workshops and the screenings, AiM also created two very useful teaching resources, with lesson plans and exercises that aim to enhance a deeper understanding of diversity in the UK.

collaborations

As a Scottish organisation, ALC and AiM have been committed to the Year of Young People 2018, and in 2018 used this nationwide context to further its focus on children and young people’s media literacy. At the same time, AiM is contributing to the dialogue and exchange between diverse groups of the population in Scotland and the UK. Film is the pre-eminent medium for children and young people to confront complex issues in their socio-cultural surroundings, and we believe that film is an audio-visual medium that can educate the young directly on diversity in the UK.

Our collaboration with IntoFilm expanded from an initial collaboration to a longer-term partnership that has resulted in an entirely new teaching resource developed by Into Film, based on our knowledge and experience, on African Animation.

IntoFilm said: "We're very proud to announce that we've teamed up with annual film festival Africa in Motion to create an educational resource, along with hosting a series of CPD events, to support teachers in evaluating their practices when it comes to diversity in the curriculum."

CPD workshops

We have held three wonderful Continued Professional Development (CPD) workshops in 2018. In collaboration with IntoFilm and with the education officers at the Royal African Society (RAS), these were exciting, fun and very productive opportunities for us to show off our work and for the teachers to tell us what they wanted and needed. We held workshops on animation techniques teachers can use in their classroom, and provided background information on the significance of animation in the teaching of cultural differences in the UK.

  • CPD workshop held together with RAS in London: 25 April 2018
  • CPD workshop with IntoFilm in Edinburgh: 29 May 2018
  • CPD workshop in collaboration with IntoFilm in Glasgow: 2 November 2018
