Short Film Competition

Short Film Competition Guidelines

Filmmakers of African nationality, from the African diaspora or who identify themselves as African are invited to submit short films of no longer than 30 minutes for Africa in Motion's prestigious annual short film competition. This will be the eleventh year that the competition has been organised by Africa in Motion. A substantial cash prize will be awarded to the winner of this competition strand. The 13th edition of the festival will take place from the 26th October – 4th November 2018 in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The competition specifically targets young and emerging African filmmakers, with the aim of nurturing and supporting new talent in African cinema. Filmmakers who enter must not have previously made a feature-length film. This call for short films refers to those works completed during 2016 or later. All genres are welcome (including fiction, documentary, animation and experimental work). As previously stated, the aim of the Africa in Motion Short Film Competition is to nurture and support young and emerging filmmakers from all over the continent, in the knowledge that making films can be a real challenge and with hope that the prize money will be invested into future film projects by the winning filmmaker(s).

A shortlist compiled from all eligible films will be announced in August 2018. A high-profile jury of local and international film specialists and established African filmmakers will choose the competition winner, to be announced during the festival.

All shortlisted films will be screened at the festival during a Short Film Competition screening. In addition to the overall winner selected by the jury, there will be an Audience Choice Award announced at the close of the festival, when both the jury’s choice and audience choice will be screened again prior to the closing film.

Please read the guidelines and regulations carefully before submitting your film.
