Synopsis

In 1992, at the height of the AIDS pandemic, activist Terence Alan Smith made a historic bid for president of the United States as his drag queen persona Joan Jett Blakk. Today, Smith reflects back on his seminal civil rights campaign and its place in American history.

About the Director

Whitney Skauge (they/them), an award-winning filmmaker dedicated to representation, is Vice President of Development and Marketing at two-time Oscar®-nominated Breakwater Studios, dedicated to the craft of the short documentary.

Their debut short film, produced by Breakwater Studios, premiered at SXSW and was distributed by lA Times Short Docs in 2021. Their films act as an extension of social and political activism with hopes of helping audiences understand themselves and the world around them better.
