Coconut & Cane: Family and Finance Event
Ousmane Sembène, Nana Mensah / Rating 12
Coconut & Cane is a new event series designed to strengthen ties within the Black diaspora using film, poetry, music and food. We're thrilled to present our next double-bill during our 2022 edition. The films selected explore themes related to family finances, inheritance, family businesses, legacy and diaspora connections.
About Coconut & Cane
We are inspired by Black Audio Film Collective and Sankofa Film and Video to reach back to the past and rediscover knowledge that will be of benefit to us in the future. The two crops in the title reflect the produce widely grown across lands occupied by Black populations and the significance they had, and continue to have, before and since, the era of the British empire.
This event series tackles the lack of representation in the film industry by creating opportunities for creative talent to watch films and attend masterclasses and talks from those already succeeding in creative fields. We have created a juncture that we wish existed when we first embarked on our own journeys. It encourages a digital detox and provides an opportunity for creatives to connect and showcase their work.
